Crochet summer outfits are the reason so many people pick up a hook in spring. Bandana tops, vests, shorts, bikinis, and bucket hats: handmade pieces that look effortless on the beach and in the city. This guide starts with a free, made-to-measure crochet bandana top pattern (the easiest summer top there is), then covers the rest of the summer wardrobe and how to style it.

Free Pattern: Made-to-Measure Bandana Top

One or two balls of DK cotton and a tape measure: this top is made to fit you.

The bandana top is a triangle worked from the point up, in dense sc (so it isn’t see-through), with ties at the corners. You increase one stitch at each edge every row, and stop when the top edge fits you. No complicated sizing needed.

Find Your Target Width

Measure around your bust. Target top-edge width = half your bust measurement + 5 cm. Example: an 88 cm bust gives 44 + 5 = 49 cm. Write it down.

It starts as a tiny point and grows by one stitch at each edge, every row.

Crochet the Triangle

Each row adds one stitch at each end with an increase (inc), so the triangle grows evenly. Place a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each row so you never miss an increase.

For an 88 cm bust at the stated gauge, the top edge will be about 97 sts after roughly 48 rows (each row has 2 more sts than the last: row n = 2n + 1). Ties made of slip-stitched chains won't stretch.

Measure the top edge as you go. Stop at half your bust measurement plus 5 cm.

Ties and Finishing

Slip-stitching back along each chain doubles its thickness, so the ties are strong and won’t stretch or snap when you tie a bow.

Long chain ties at each top corner go around your back. Slip stitch back along them for strength.

Tie the back ties in a bow, then the neck ties behind your neck. Adjust both until the top sits snugly.

Tied at the back and neck, the ties adjust the fit perfectly.

Variations: add a picot or shell edging along the two slanted sides, make it in two-color stripes, or make it smaller as a hair bandana (see crochet hair accessories).

More Crochet Summer Outfit Ideas

Crochet Vests

The crochet vest: granny squares or ribbed panels, worn over a tee or on its own.

A crochet vest works over a tee, on its own, or layered over a summer dress. The easiest versions are granny squares joined into front and back panels, or two ribbed rectangles joined at the shoulders and sides.

Crochet Shorts

Crochet shorts: a lined, drawstring-waist pair turns into a matching set with a top.

Shorts are two identical pieces (each a tube with a crotch shaping) joined together with an elastic or drawstring waist. Line them, or wear them as a beach cover-up. Pair with a matching top for a two-piece set.

Crochet Bikinis and Swim Tops

Bikini tops are two small triangles on a string, just like the bandana, scaled down.

A triangle bikini top is two small triangles, worked exactly like the bandana top, joined by a string. It’s best for sunbathing (see the FAQ below about swimming).

Bucket Hats

The crochet bucket hat: sun protection with personality.

The crochet bucket hat uses the same top-down crown as our beanie pattern, with a flared brim. Do it in cotton stripes for summer.

Beach Bags

Every summer outfit needs a crochet beach bag.

Every crochet summer outfit needs a bag. Try a raffia-look tote or a mesh market bag from our crochet bag ideas.

How to Style Crochet Summer Outfits

Festival look: a crochet top, a hair bandana, and lots of sunshine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size a crochet bandana top?

Measure around your bust, halve it, and add about 5 cm: that's the width of the finished top edge. The ties close the gap at your back, so the fit is forgiving. Measure as you crochet and stop when you reach it.

Can I make the bandana top lacier?

Yes. Work it in half double crochet or in rows of V-stitches for a more open fabric, but note that taller stitches make a longer, pointier triangle. Increase two stitches at each edge per row instead of one to keep the same shape.

What yarn is best for crochet summer clothes?

Cotton, cotton-linen blends, or bamboo: breathable, sweat-friendly, and they hold their shape. Avoid wool and acrylic for summer tops; they're too warm and can feel sticky.

Crochet Yarn Guide →
Can I swim in a crochet bikini?

Crochet swimwear is best for sunbathing and short dips. Cotton absorbs water and gets heavy, and stitches stretch when wet. For real swimming, line it with swimsuit fabric or use a specialty nylon or polyester yarn.

How do I stop a crochet top from being see-through?

Use dense stitches like single crochet (as in this bandana top), go down a hook size, or wear it over a bralette or bikini top, which is part of the summer look anyway.
